This project integrates the material ecology and low-cost user initiated housing with improvement on the Disaster Resiliency pertaining to specific regions. This research project brings together the expertise and students from MITÕs Material Science, Building Technology and Architecture departments to probe the strategies for low cost, incremental, and resilient housing. Through in-depth analysis of incremental housing precedents, quantitative assessment of environmental and economic costs, and consideration of resilience to natural hazards, the workshop seeks to develop housing solutions that are economically, environmentally and socially sustainable. This housing will be constructed with materials that are engineered from the by-products of the local industrial systems. The aim is to develop frugal and appropriate technologies that can be disseminated in communities throughout India to form the basis of a resilient community based building process.
