The authors have each amassed huge collections of power and telephone insulators that were used in New Zealand. In the course of travelling the country in search of new additions to our collections, Power Depots allowed us to search their discard piles, secondhand shops were checked out, online auctions were watched and of course 'in the wild' treks along old lines were done for the discards from updating changeouts that the Lines Company's did in the course of maintenance. In the 20 years of doing this, many insulators were photographed 'In-Situ'. Some still being used, some were still in the air on a crossarm but not in use, some are seen on old buildings. We have been blessed in New Zealand for the variety that available to be found. Several English brands and multiple styles were used. French glass insulators are seen. Early large power porcelain insulators from the USA and Canada have been photographed. The 'New Zealand Insulators' Company (NZI) started manufacturing insulators in 1924 and many of the early 'drippy glazed' examples of these were seen and photographed in our travels. New Zealand has most of the known 'metal capped' glass insulators manufactured by the Pilkington Company in the United Kingdom from 1943. Some examples are not found anywhere else in the world, and a large selection are seen 'In-Situ' in this book.
