In 1884 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania the tea importing partnership of Irwin & McBride was founded by Andrew P. Irwin and Robert F Irwin, two sons of Elizabeth and Samuel Irwin. The company later became IRWIN-HARRISONS-WHITNEY,INC., the largest tea brokerage corporation of its type in the United States during the inter war years. Between 1900 and 1940 Irwin-Harrisons-Whitney was the largest exporter of tea from Japan and the largest importer of tea into the United States. Samuel Irwin taught his sons all there was to know about the tea business. After the Civil War where Samuel lost his right arm due to a battle wound, he return to Philadelphia and established a pushcart business selling coffees, teas and other food products to support his growing family.
