Jesu, Oba Ogo (Jesus, King of Glory) was composed on May 20, 2016. It is my first composition in Nigeria since I returned from the United States after several years of sojourn abroad. It is also my first work for vocal solo with organ accompaniment. Jesu, Oba Ogo is an original composition that celebrates the attributes, majesty, and virtues of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Since Yoruba language is musically inclined like every other indigenous dialects in Nigeria, it was not difficult to create original tune for the text. The melodic shape of the words is dictated by the tonal inflections of the Yoruba language. Hence, the melodic contours rise and fall with the innate tunes of the words. Consequently, the best pitch collection to outline the vocal melody is the popular pentatonic scale as found in most traditional and folk songs in southwest culture of Nigeria. The organ accompaniment retains the pentatonic mode with occasional shades of diatonicism for effective coloring in certain sections.
