First, Joan Lovejoy, a seemingly harmless 16 year-old-girl, is discovered by the local hospital to have an unknown abnormality in her bloodstream. After hearing what it is, however, her parents are convinced it's nothing but a joke.
But then people start disappearing.
Before long, people are getting hurled across rooms by invisible forces, being harmed without being touched, and those are just the fortunate ones. The others, well, simply lose their minds. And that's just the beginning.
