Jocassee Gorges Bouldering Volume I includes the boulderfields along Highways 11, 178 and 130Éthe major roads that frame the Jocassee Gorges. This guide compiles the areas in the second editions of the Upstate Bouldering Guide and Southern Appalachian Bouldering, along with 6 areas and 55 routes that were cut from these editions PLUS 7 new areas/sub-areas and around 100 new routes! The Jocassee Gorges are some of the most remote, rugged, wild and scenic areas in the Southeast US, much less northwestern South Carolina. The Gorges were once the capital of the Lower Cherokee Indians and by the late 1700Õs, were a central hub for many trade routes with the Atlantic Ocean and European traders. In 1998, the state of South Carolina purchased most of the property and created one of the largest protected Wildlife Management areas in the Southeast, a total area of 250 square miles! Now there are 32 bouldering areas and around 1,500 routes documented within the Jocassee Gorges, representing 20+ years of development!
