81st (West African) Division was formed from units of the Royal West African Frontier Force (RWAFF) for service in Burma against the Japanese. Their use of Auxiliary Groups to head-carry stores was ideal the rugged Burmese terrain in which even jeeps struggled. Such was the reputation they forged, one Nigerian Brigade was diverted to join the Chindits and a brief account of this episode is included.
