Kibbutz, the Hebrew word for 'gathering', is a collective community in Israel with its historic roots, in the early twentieth century, in agriculture. The emergence of the kibbutz movement was unique to a specific country, to a specific time in history, and to a specific set of ideological values. But modern Israel is more materialistic and less idealistic and, in order to survive, the kibbutz has reorganised itself along capitalist lines and transformed itself into a structure that reflects the changes in Israeli society as a whole.
