In the village of Kilpeck, about eight miles south-west of Hereford may be found the small parish church of St Mary and St David, justifiably described by Pevsner as Ôone of the most perfect Norman village churches in EnglandÕ. The church was built during the 1130s and completed by 1140, and this monograph describes and analyses Kilpeck church as a celebrated example of the work of the 'Herefordshire School of Sculpture' and therefore its context within the cultural history of twelfth century England, and as an example of the family patronage that seemingly underpins both the granting and the decoration of the church and the shaping of the landscape within which the church sits, reflects the Ôcult of familyÕ that was integral to the culture of lordship in the twelfth century.
