L‡szl— Husz‡r was a Hungarian of Jewish origin. Born in 1932, his idyllic childhood was brought to an abrupt end by the Second World War. His immediate family survived the nazis but his grandfather, aunts and numerous friends and more distant relations were murdered in Auschwitz. As a schoolboy and architectural student, he lived through the Rakosi terror and actively participated in the 1956 revolution. Escaping to England, he was active in Hungarian expatriate politics at the LSE but realising that change in Hungary would take a generation, he began a career as a physical planner in Ghana where he also had a daughter. He returned to teach in British Universities where he married his first wife, a Hungarian expatriate, adopting her two sons and bringing his daughter to live with them. Setting up a planning firm with a colleague, he launched on a successful career as a regional, urban and settlement planner very largely in SE Asia. Divorcing his first wife, he met his second wife in Thailand and they had one boy. Faced by serious health problems, he returned to London to give his young son a stable home and for ten years bravely endured numerous health problems, before dying in 2007, greatly respected and loved by his family and his many friends.
