This book is based upon letters written home to Canal Dover, Ohio by two brothers, George H. Hildt and Daniel G. Hildt. Both brothers serviced as officers for the Union Army during the American Civil War. Letters Written to George H. Hildt from his cousin John McLean Hildt while he was a cadet at West Point Academy, and written during his service as a Union officer in the Civil War have also been included.

This book contains over 100 letters with the majority dated from 1852 through 1866, during which time the Civil War started, was fought, and ended.

Civil War Battle summaries and maps have been included, along with the history of George's regiment, newspaper articles written by soldiers in his regiment, photographs of family and fellow soldiers from George's photo album, as well as biographies of George H. Hildt, Daniel G. Hildt, John McLean Hildt, and much more information about the Hildt family and their service during the Civil War.
