The publication of the letters that follow are intended to provide a portrait of how one soldier perceived of and coped with the horrors of war while all the time concerned about the well-being of his young family back home. Like many of his compatriots, George seldom talked of his experiences in the war, even when prompted by others. He did not feel his service deserved any special recognition; he and many others did what needed to be done to counter powerful forces that threatened his countries and familiesÕ future. While every soldierÕs situation and response is unique it is hoped that a look into GeorgeÕs experience will increase awareness of what society asks of its soldiers and as you read the names of relatives and community members on memorials in town squares, courthouses, etc. around the country you will be more mindful of their dedication and sacrifice.
