Lyrical and Expressive Studies for Trumpet (Expanded Edition) is a collection that includes Thirty-Six 8-Measure Vocalises, Op93, and Ten Vocalises, Op. 45, by the 19th century composer, Ferdinand Sieber. Each of these has been transposed for Bb trumpet and an alternative version in a different key has been added (often, but not always, in a somewhat simpler key), Therefore, there are actually two versions of every study. One of the most important skills a musician can develop is the art of expression in music; making music come alive through dynamic contrast, varied articulations, dramatic pacing, vibrato, and other elements of musical expression. An excellent way to develop this skill isthrough the practice of lyrical melodies. The vocalises (song-like studies to develop expressive singing) of Concone, Bordogni, and other composers/voice teachers have been effectively used for many years by trumpeters for developing just this skill.

INCLUDED IN THIS COLLECTIONÉ

Thirty-Six 8-Measure Vocalises, Op. 92
The uniqueness of these Thirty-Six 8-Measure Vocalises is their very short length. This
allows the trumpeter to focus on fully employing the elements of musical expression in
an artistic performance of only two to four very short phrases. Additionally, for the trumpeter with
a busy schedule, the short length of these studies can be a bonus in that these provide the opportunity to still work on developing musical expression even when practice time is limited.

Ten Vocalises, Op. 45
The Ten Vocalises, Op. 45, are more standard in their length and thus provide the
trumpeter with more of an opportunity to work on musical pacing (including
the pacing of dynamics and tempo), endurance, and the development of vibrato.

In both of these sets of vocalises, each study is presented in two keys:
1. The Original Key is shown first (mezzo soprano version) - Transposed here for Bb Trumpet
2. An Alternative Key (often, although not always, a key with fewer sharps or flats)

Glossary
A glossary of the music terms found in these vocalises is included.

This publication is for intermediate and advanced trumpet players
