Main Street, IA as an independent study, aims to consider the historical development of the built environment within rural Iowan main streets. Volume One is divided into four parts: selection, case studies, synthesis, and the quintessential townscape. Towns researched are determined by a combination of exploration and research, leading students to feasible locations. Within the twelve case studies investigated, students experienced these main streets through personal travel, documentation, cataloging, photography, personal interviews, and wayfinding to better understand successful townscapesÕ development patterns and themes.
