The first book written by a Mormon prophet, Mediation and Atonement was also the first sustained analysis of the atonement from a Mormon perspective.
John Taylor, third president of the LDS Church, composed the book with the help of able secretary and research assistant George Reynolds. Not long after the book was published, Taylor went into hiding to avoid federal prosecution on polygamy charges and would spend the rest of his life there.
