Meditation on a Yoruba Hymn is a quiet and contemplative work. It is structurally divided into three sections. It opens with an introductory prelude in duple meter and gently moves into the second section in triple meter. This section is based on a Yoruba church hymn, "Idahun re la nreti" (We are waiting to hear from you). The music closes quietly with the first four measures of the prelude. Closing the piece softly symbolizes the period of waiting on God for the answer to the prayer, that is, the period of SILENCE!
