Spencer and Josephine Colby, of Moose River, Maine, wrote letters to one another during the final months of the Civil War. Spencer served in the 14th Maine regiment. Following the war, the family went west to Nebraska and settled in Marquette, where the author's mother was born. As a 14 year-old, Robert Colby Nelson used the original letters for a social studies project. This is the result.
