In Memoirs of a Nonexistent Nation, Patrick Braga records the fleeting histories of a short-lived country in the woods. Composed in a mixture of poetry and prose, this short volume covers the history of the Independent Governorate of Sylvania, a postmodern experimental micronation he established.
The book begins with the Hegoalde•d, the Sylvanian national epic poem that tells of the ancient King Olaf. Following are the foundations of Sylvanian mythology, some territorial descriptions, and accounts of the early history of Sylvania. The text then takes on a more political tone. The Memoirs conclude with a final set of recollections and an explanation of Ludprim, the Sylvanian national sport. Interspersed throughout the text are hand-drawn illustrations of Sylvania and its mythology.
Regardless of what may happen to Sylvania in the future, Memoirs of a Nonexistent Nation will surely keep Sylvanian culture and history alive in the years to come.
