Memories of Us is an illustrated childrenÕs book that comprises a collection of short stories shared by people from all over the world, as they recount their favorite family memories. These stories span across different backgrounds, cultures, and definitions of family. The concept of ÒfamilyÓ varies from person to person and ÒMemories of UsÓ aims to capture the shared experiences and emotions that can come from the wide range of ÒfamiliesÓ people form.
I chose to format these stories into a childrenÕs book to encourage a sense of nostalgia as readers encounter both funny and emotional anecdotes that may remind them of their own memories. The goal of this book is to visually reflect the memories that often stay in the back of our minds. It is one thing to remember a special time in our lives, and it is another to experience and see it come to life.
As I interviewed friends and collected stories from strangers, I chose one key emotion to center my illustrations around. Overall, I hope my audience feels a sense of warmth as they read my book. The moments we spend with our families often form the core memories that make us who we are, and I hope to memorialize and give justice to the importance of these relationships and the value of these memories. Memories of Us is dedicated to our families for their constant support and presence in our lives.
