About the Author
Leonard Mertz was born in the river bottoms of central Illinois. He attended Indiana State University at Terre Haute and later furthered his education at Arkansas Technical University in Russellville, Arkansas.
Mertz taught in a one room country school and later moved up to junior - senior high school as a teacher, coach, and administrator. After teaching for several years at Witts Springs in the Ozarks near Marshall, Arkansas, he moved to Texas were he coached with an outstanding record until his retirement in 1988.
