This book documents the history of one of the first coin operated movie viewing machines, the Mutoscope. ÊBorn during the very beginnings of film history, the Mutoscope spawned and supported the success of two companies, American Mutoscope and Biograph, and the International Mutoscope Reel Company, over the course of 80 years. The Mutoscope is still operating in vintage arcades around the US and Europe. ÊThe device can be found in the collections of renowned film/technology museums such as The Smithsonian, MOMA and CinŽmathque Franaise. ÊThis second volume details the history of company that resurrected the Mutoscope from obscurity: The International Mutoscope Reel Company. ÊRead how the Mutoscope formed the basis for an entirely new company, run by Russian ŽmigrŽ, William Rabkin. His keen insights into building a variety of coin operated amusements that the public desired gave him the moniker, "The Penny Arcade King." He built a New York City manufacturing powerhouse, while competing head-to-head with the multitude of Chicago-based coin operated machine manufacturers. Along this journey, many new versions of the Mutoscope were built, and new reels were filmed allowing the public to see a whole new version of 1 cent movie entertainments.
