A young Political Science professor takes his family to Uganda in 1967-68, to learn about Africa by teaching at Makerere University College in Kampala and traveling around East Africa. Uganda is newly independent and its democracy is at times shaky, but the people are open and generous. This is the first of a dozen or more trips to Africa, which the author conflates into a 34 year long field trip. This volume covers only the first year; more will follow.
