Abul Rahman Pazhwak is an Afghan poet and statesman (1919-1995). This epic poem was written soon after Kabul high school girls rose up to condemn and resist the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979. Upon hearing the tragic news of these students being massacred in broad daylight by the Afghan troops loyal to the Communist regime. Pazhwak dedicated this masterpiece to their patriotism and ultimate sacrifice. It is assumed that Pazhwak believed it would be his last piece of writing, as he was suffering from a bleeding ulcer induced by stress while under house arrest.
