In 2007, Joe Yantachka built a cedar canoe, plunked it in the Susquehanna River at Cooperstown, N.Y., and paddled all the way to the Gulf of Mexico via inland waterways and the Intracoastal shipping lane on the Atlantic coast. When he got there, he turned around and got on the Appalachian Trail at its beginning in Georgia and headed home.
This is a chronicle of Joe's journey from start to finish, complete with meetings with offbeat characters, rough going through hazardous terrain, and hair-raising encounters with wild animals.
