Reforms that were intended to stamp out the undue electoral influence of party bosses, harassment of voters at the polls, and rampant election fraud created a system of ballot regulations and election procedures that only a few decades later would provide the mechanisms by which the dominant Democratic and Republican political parties would eventually entrench themselves and their incumbents against independent and third party opposition. This book explains how ballots in the United States came to be restricted and what it is like to work in politics outside of the two major parties.
