Who Jesus and his apostles thought he was, and who the Christian church of today thinks he is are 'two very different things'. We know this because of what Luke recorded as the disciples last thoughts about him. On the road to Emmaus while talking to a stranger, two of his disciples confided, ÒHe [Jesus] was a prophet, powerful in word and deed before God and all the people. The chief priests and our rulers handed him over to be sentenced to death, and they crucified him; 'but we had hoped that he was the one who was going to redeem Israel.Ó And just before his 'ascension into heaven' his apostles asked him, ÒLord, are you at this time going to restore the kingdom to Israel?Ó
