Orin Ayo (A Song of Joy) for Multiple Vocal Solos and piano accompaniment was composed in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, Nigeria, on 14 November 2022. This project was commissioned by Myrelingues in Cannes, France, for the special occasion of the 2nd Africa LyricÕs Opera Competition, for young singers, organized by the non-profit organization, Women of Africa (Pst. Patricia Djomseu). It is an original composition in which the melody and text are based on the Yoruba language from southwest Nigeria. The Yoruba language is a tonal language in which the text mirrors the inflections of the words. In other words, the melody moves in the direction of the tonal patterns of the text, so that it will convey the correct meaning of the words. If the tone of a word moves up, the melody will automatically move up, and vice versa. Should the melodic contours of the words deviate from these procedures, it will alter the meaning of the texts, thereby, not conveying the correct meaning of the words. From the foregoing, the Yoruba language is a musical language. The melodic phrase of the text is embedded within the words. This makes the work for the composer easy to create an original tune for a song. The aforementioned creative principles have been strictly adhered to in Orin Ayo. The songÕs melodic structure is derivative of the tonal patterns of the words. The song is in two-part form, adagio, and allegro, similar to the arias of oratorios and operas. Accidentals are used to realize subtle modulations, while enharmonics are utilized for coloristic effects and to mitigate the boredom of repetitive notes.
