This project begins to address the need for more bicycle and pedestrian (b/p) curriculum for transportation faculty by 1) surveying planning and transportation faculty to determine existing and desired courses and curriculum modules on b/p design and planning; and 2) expanding the opportunities for students to learn about b/p transportation by designing and testing new curriculum modules in transportation planning and engineering.
The survey shows how b/p topics are covered in transportation planning and engineering courses. It also provides insight into faculty and student interest in these topics, and a data source for module and curriculum development.
Piloting the curriculum modules demonstrated how b/p topics can be successfully integrated into existing courses. Student evaluations showed a low level of knowledge about basic elements of b/p facilities design and analysis, showing a need for more integration of these topics into transportation planning and engineering courses.
