This is the life story of Colonel Verling K. Hart, a Civil War veteran of the U.S. 19th Infantry who later served with General George Armstrong Custer in the 7th U.S. Cavalry and with the 5th U.S. Cavalry under General George R. Crook. Verling served with Custer and alongside of Lieutenant Henry Moore Harrington in Company C, 7th Cavalry during the 1873 Yellowstone Campaign and in the Black Hills Expedition of 1874. Missing the fight at the Little Big Horn by only a few months, Verling was assigned to the 5th Cavalry. He served under the command of General Crook marching, fighting, and building forts until his death in the line of duty. After Verling's death his widow, Juliet, inherited the town of Buffalo, Wyoming, but she would have to fight for her rights. Although this book stands alone, it also completes Walt Cross' trilogy of the Old West comprised of "Custer's Lost Officer", "From Little Big Horn to the Potomac" and this latest addition.
