As the 1980s dawned on the University of Tennessee campus in Knoxville, also known as ÒThe Hill,Ó the cast of characters was set for the start of a new decade, ready for the satirical scrutiny of a fledgling student editorial cartoonist. Ronald Reagan had just been elected as the 40th President of the United States. Lamar Alexander, Randy Tyree, and Victor Ashe were early in their tenures as Tennessee Governor, Knoxville Mayor, and Tennessee State Senator. The legendary Johnny Majors was head coach of the Volunteers football team and Don DeVoe compiled an impressive record as head coach of the UT basketball team.
This collection of editorial cartoons takes a look back at a time when change was afoot in East Tennessee as well as throughout the country, from a historic economic recession and landmark national debt, to the hope and promise of a WorldÕs Fair as a springboard for future development and prosperity in Knoxville.
