Most of these works are available only in early folio editions and are inaccessible for classroom use. The principle guiding the choice of selections was that they be representative of some of the major authors and that they reflect some of the major theological concerns of early Lutheranism. Here the student will find examples, not only of confessional and dogmatic writings, but also of historical and polemical, biblical, and exegetical, practical and devotional works. Four authors - Luther, Melanchton, Chemnitz, and Gerhard - are represented by relatively lengthy selections. In all cases, however, it seemed advisable that the individual selections be large enough both to present a complete and unified thought or argument and to yield lasting impressions of the authors who are represented. Although the immediate concerns of the course are linguistic, the ultimate purpose is to stimulate interest in the primary documents of one of the most important epochs in the Church's life. Not even the most inept choice of readings can fail entirely, for, in spite of the fusty Latin, most of these works still have vitality and a compelling immediacy.
