Nearly every pattern and form in Islamic art has been conceived through the use of a rigorous constructive method of geometrical relationships. These relationships were commonly derived from circles, squares, radii, circumscriptions, inscriptions, points, midpoints, connections, etc. Inherently, the more complex the Islamic pattern the more complex the underlying logic of geometrical relationships. The most elaborate of these Islamic patterns are the Muqarnas; a clustering of small pointed niches, used in tiers projecting over those below, usually constructed of corbelled brick, stone, stucco, or wood. The purpose of this book is to explore the geometrical relationships of the underlying Muqarnas construct through the use of computational transformation. Using Grasshopper for Rhinocerous 3D, cloud points extracted from each of the four Muqarnas types was subjected to proximity relations, attractors, and ultimately interpreted as lines in a series of drawings/animations.
