Paul was born unlike the rest of the Atlantic puffins who have orange bills. His was red and he captured excess notice in his early life. This attention made him feel that he was better than everyone else and with time he found himself isolated from his friends. He had become a puffed-up puffin. His solitude made him rethink what was important and so he stopped drawing attention to himself and found himself surrounded by good friends. He learned the valuable lesson: It is not what is on the outside that makes one special, it is who they are on the inside.
