Practices that conserve, protect, and limit the burden placed on our ecosystems have become a matter of urgent necessity...In the fall of 2009, in response to its fifth biannual Request for Proposals, a multidisciplinary team of faculty and students at Florida International University submitted a proposal to the U.S. Department of Energy [DOE] and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory [NREL]...Our goal for Decathlon 2011 was the design and realization of a solar-powered house that visibly performed in real time. The FIU perFORM[D]ance House would noticeably register and respond to the generation and acquisition of energy Ðas well as to its expenditure through daily use.
