Clinical usage of biomaterials became practical during the advent of aseptic surgical techniques. Earlier medical procedures involving usage of biomaterials were generally unsuccessful due to infections and rejection by the host tissues. Problems associated with infections were exacerbated due to biocompatibility issues. Many biomedically engineered bone plates (biomaterials) failed as a result of lack of sophistication in their mechanical designs, since they were thin and were characterized by stress concentrations at vertices (if any). Experimental data discussed in this book analyses the characteristic properties of some of these biomaterials. Some of the theories, principles and their applications that are discussed in this book include the kinetics and theory of shrinkage; the phenomena and theory associated with thermal behaviour of materials and the models and viscoelastic theories. Chapter 6 outlines and discusses experimentally, the viscoelastic characteristic of human dentine.
