The King James Bible is a Primary Source for the way we are. Beyond everyday expressions, shared assumptions, and culture, its 400-year impact on history has been enormous. This influence is being forgotten as churches abandon it for new translations, drowning out important echoes from our past. Also, the Bible is being used to deny scientific discovery and undermine secular government. For its relevance to our past and our present, students should know what's in the KJV, and what's not in it.
Plainsong Bible is a shorter, accessible, nonsectarian summary. One-fourth as long as the KJV, it makes the Bible comprehensible, and clarifies the development of ideas. Unlike the usual paraphrase or condensation, it showcases the extraordinary language of the KJVÑand leaves in the indelicate, the off-key, and the contradictory. Occasional comments and historical essays clarify and connect.
