When the Berlin Wall was torn down and the Eastern European socialist states were overthrown, liberal historians in the West declared that this was Òthe end of history.Ó Capitalism, they claimed, was the final stage of human economic development. Liberal democracy is the shining city on the hill. Borders will be open to capital and labour. Things can only get better from here.
But that isnÕt quite the whole story, is it?
