In this collection of poems titled, Reflections of a Wombless Woman, Emily Wilkinson attempts to explore her relationship with infertility, deep loss, and femininity while raising subtle awareness for endometriosis and many complicated factors that come with the disease.
Endometriosis is a full body inflammatory disease characterized by lesions similar but histologically different from the endometrium. While not malignant, endometriosis can vascularize and create its own nerve supply, biosynthesizing its own estrogen and growing throughout the body. Symptoms of this disease include severe pain, infertility, increased risk of miscarriage, nausea, vomiting, organ damage, and internal bleeding. Emily has had five surgeries to treat this disease, including a total hysterectomy at the age of 24. It is estimated on average that 1 out of 10 woman live with this disease.
