I enjoy painting kites for two main reasons. First, they remind me of my childhood. Growing up in Haiti, most kids of my generation and I, did not have access to ready-made toys as it is the case now, so we had to make our own models. It was not always an easy task, but we had so much fun. This type of undertaking kept up busy, focused, out of troubles while providing us hours and hours of safe, useful and cheap entertainment.
Secondly, I see in the kites a metaphor of the Haitian peopleÕs resilience and fortitude. If a kite can fly in the sky despite being attached to someone by a string, Haiti can also overcome its misfortune, brought about by so many factors, and become a successful and respected nation.
