A collaboration between photographer, writer Carole Harmel and weaver/photographer Lialia Kuchma, "Rewoven: Photographs Thread Words" takes sixteen photographs of various evocative objects such as shells, pregnant women, leaves, tree roots, and so forth, and reweaves them in two ways. First, they are cut up and then woven with thread, which makes them appear as if they are unravelling, dissolving the expected naturalistic realism of the photographic image into a more open and enigmatic image, often becoming almost abstract. Second, they are woven with their names in both English and French, a weaving that takes place ultimately in the mind of the viewer, but which begins with unusual juxtapositions in the image itself. For example, A nude woman sits on a chair in "Chair/Chair" (chair is the French word for flesh). The French call puns "Jeu de Mots", or word plays, and this project rejoices in a serious, though also irreverent sense of play.
