The first US Wooden Nickel ÔFlatÕ was issued in Tenino as a result of the Great Depression in 1931. The issue of such an instrument to cope with the shortage of money at the time proved such a success that other communities quickly followed suit. It was not long before communities were issuing Wooden Nickel ÔFlatsÕ to commemorate land-marks in their history. This book looks at just a mere sampling of these interesting bits of Americana and what prompted their issue as commemorative pieces.
