The primary source for finding oneÕs American Civil War ancestors who served from Ohio has been the Official Roster of the Soldiers of the State of Ohio in the War of the Rebellion 1861-1866. This 12-volume set was published under the authority of the Ohio General Assembly between 1886 and 1893.
This monumental work lists the regiments, battalions, and companies of Ohioans who served in the U.S. Volunteers, the activated Ohio militia, the U.S. Colored Troops from Ohio, and the enlisted U.S. Navy men from Ohio. The Official Roster failed to list 11,228 Ohioans who were commissioned or who had enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Civil War.
Ohio contributed 319,659 volunteer soldiers out of a total of 2,859,132 volunteers from all of the states and territories. This represents approximately 11% of the total volunteer force during the Civil War. The U.S. Army had a strength of 16,367 officers and enlisted men on 1 January 1861. Approximately 62,000 men enlisted in the U.S. Army during the Civil War. Ohio contributed 252 officers and 11,016 enlisted men for the U.S. Army, according to the research found in this book. This represents 18% of total U.S. Army commissions and enlistments during the war.
