Most of the 70 hymns in this collection can be found in Hymns Ancient and Modern Revised (AMR), published in 1950. This was a most worthy revised compilation of longstanding hymns, psalm adaptations, and translations, dating back originally to 1861; to which the English speaking, and singing, Church has been much indebted. My selection does not include any Christmas carols, unless you count ÔO come, O come, EmmanuelÕ, but, strictly speaking, thatÕs an Advent hymn. The four hymns not found in AMR are ÔJesus, good above all otherÕ (thereÕs a shorter version in AMR); ÔAmazing grace, how sweet the soundÕ; ÔIn heavenly love abidingÕ; and ÔThe LordÕs my Shepherd, IÕll not wantÕ. Whilst all the words of all the other hymns can be found in the words only edition of AMR, a few of the tunes I have specified for them are not the ones printed in the well indexed and informative music edition.
