The Shaolin Temple was built in 496 CE in the during the period of the Northern and Southern Empires (N‡n B_i Ch‡o), at the foot of the Song Mountains in the north-central province of Honan, China.
In 520 CE, a Buddhist patriarch from India by the name of Boddhidharma (known as Ta-Mo in China) visited the Shaolin Temple to spread the new Chan (Zen) philosophy. Finding the monks of the temple in poor health and stamina, Ta-Mo created a new training regimen consisting of a unique blend of moving meditations and defensive combat skills.
This practice sparked the beginning of Shaolin Fist Kung-Fu, which would rise to become the literal foundation for almost every known martial style!
