Sheltered Instruction is a relatively new and innovative way to combine core education with language learning. English Language Learners, or ELL students, are often thrown into standard core classrooms with native English speakers, possibly while taking separate English as a Second Language courses. Topics, lessons, and key vocabulary get lost in translation, thus making it exceptionally difficult for an ELL student to succeed among the ranks of their classmates. In standard classrooms, ELL students get a less than adequate education as a result of the language barrier. A ÒshelteredÓ class consists of all ELL students and combines a core subject with English language learning. Since this teaching method is still in its infancy, training for teachers in a sheltered setting is sparse. This study will provide the basis of Sheltered Teaching while examining distinct tactics and practices needed for success in the classroom.
