ÒFontanelliÕs Mi Coraz—nÉ is a highly expressive, dramatic and lyrical tone-poem, depicting both the tragedy of Guernica and PicassoÕs pictorial summation of the events of April 26, 1937. The work is a personal viewpoint of the historical polarization dividing Ôthe two SpainsÕ, the Spain of culture and spirituality, at one end, confronted by the Spain of intolerance, dogma and cruelty, on the other. The recurring use of fragments from King Alfonso XÕs Rosa das Rosas and GuridiÕs Amorosa anchors the narrative in the domain of beauty and compassion and provides a powerful counterpart to the brutal desolation of its desperate moments.
