Born in exotic Java in the Dutch East Indies, Pierre enjoyed a care-free childhood until World War II brought it to an abrupt end. European men became prisoners of war, leaving women and children vulnerable to looters who pillaged their homes, raping and killing along the way. This is Pierre's story of his familyÕs courageous struggle to survive those dangerous times and endure 3 1/2 years as captives in the oppressive Japanese concentration camps. After watching his brother die and nearly dying from cerebral malaria, Pierre was separated from his mother and sisters and sent to a menÕs camp for the duration of the war. During those lonely, desperate years of hard labor, he risked his life daily to stay alive. Despite missing 5 years of school and nearly dying from disease and starvation, Pierre miraculously passed stringent testing and physical requirements to become a fighter pilot in the Royal Dutch Air Force. His story shows how faith can help us soar to greater heights than we can navigate on our own.
