Software Carpentry's mission is to make scientists and engineers more productive by teaching them basic computing skills. Founded in 1998, our volunteer instructors now run over a hundred two-day workshops every year in a dozen different countries for thousands of learners.
This book contains our core lessons on the Unix shell, version control with Git, programming in Python, and using databases with SQL. More importantly, it will show you how to automate repetitive tasks, track and share work, create programs that are readable, testable, and reusable, and manage data, so that you can get more done in less time and with less pain.
