English translation of original Latin facsimile by Charles de L'ecluse (February 19, 1526ÐLeiden April 4, 1609). Charles de L`ecluse's 1582 book, or Carolus Clusius, as his friends called him, is the earliest written description surrounding any area of Captain Francis DrakeÕs circumnavigation (1577-1580); preceding the 1589 "Famous Voyage" published by the Richard Hakluyt.

Reverend Martin Pollard, O.S.B. of Mount Angel Abbey at St. Benedict, Oregon translates this 16th century Latin botanical document to present day English.

Poor Xeroxing and poor health caused the translation delay until late 1992.
Although the facsimiles contained in this production may not be up to some standards, never the less, this work is deemed necessary for the scholar of 16th century plants and Drake. The process of translating from one language to another is not exact therefore; there may be some variance from word to word of the translated pages.
