His father Venkata Bhatta had two brothers, Trimalla Bhatta and Prabhodananda Sarasvati, who were very influential in Gopala Bhatta's life. The father and two brothers were followers of the Ramanujacarya philosophy of qualified monism, and were dedicated followers of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

When Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu toured south India in 1512 AD, He spent the four months of the rainy season (Caturmasya) in Sri Rangam staying in the house of Gopala Bhatta's father Trimalla Bhatta, a sevaka at the Sri Ranganatha temple. Gopal Bhatta was a young boy at that time, approximately nine years old. Mahaprabhu had many deep sastric discussions with his father Trimalla Bhatta, convincing him that krsna-bhakti was the topmost form of worship. For his son Gopal Bhatta, Mahaprabhu became his life and soul. Gopala Bhatta would serve Him incessantly. He would wash His clothes, accompany Him to the Kaveri River, and massage His feet. He remained close by Mahaprabhu, and in this way served Him with utmost sincerity.

Gopal Bhatta was known to be not only learned but also very kind hearted. After his parents passed away, he left for Vrndavana to meet with and serve Rupa and Sanatana Gosvami, as instructed by Mahaprabhu.

He meditated on Mahaprabhu's instructions to worship Krsna in Vraja, and accepting the sila to be non-different from the Lord Himself, Gopal Bhatta brought the salagrama sila to Vrndavana and began worshiping Him as Vrajendra-nandana Krsna. One evening in the summer before falling asleep, Gopal Bhatta began remembering Mahaprabhu's promise that he would come to Vrndavana. That night he dreamed of Mahaprabhu and His associates, and upon awakening his 'salagram sila' had transformed into a beautiful deity with a three-fold bending form, and two hands holding a flute. Gazing at the deity, Gopal realized that it was the exact same form that Sri Gauranga had revealed to him earlier in Sri Rangam. This deity became known as 'Radha-Ramana', a manifestation of Caitanya Mahaprabhu.

This book is filled with many rasa-laden pastimes and teachings of Gopal Bhatta Gosvami with Caitanya Mahaprabhu.
